After the restoration and maintenance projects, the iconic castle of Skiathos, on the northernmost tip of the island, was inaugurated by the Minister of Culture.

The old castle is a reference point and is the most emblematic landmark on the island because for centuries the Skiathians have lived through the pirates and barbarians who threatened their lives and their existence.

The castle became known thanks to Alexander Papadiamantis and the event was “memorial” – as Ms Mendoni told the great Greek writer.

The moments were extremely moving, as the icon of Panagia Kounistras, who is also a patron saint of the island, was transferred to the castle for the first time.

The works

The Castle of Skiathos is a monument – a sample of medieval fortified settlement and is a historical preserved monument. It was built in the 14th century and was the only settlement of the island until 1823, when the present city was abandoned and inhabited in the port, resulting in its gradual rule.

The fortification settlement surrounded by walls, occupies an area of about 25 acres and is in an extremely steep location, on a secluded rock that is wet by the sea everywhere. With the dry it communicates with a very narrow strip of land in the south, where there was the now damaged wooden bridge resting on high stone -built pedestals.

Now a complete restoration and fastening of the podiums of a new safe bridge has now been restored, the stone gate was restored and the redevelopment of the castle access trail was completed.

CASTRO SKIATHOU

The second phase will be fastened to the Church of Christ, at the Church of St. Nicholas, at the Church of Our Lady of Prekla, in the Church of Our Lady of Megalomata, in the mosque, and in the administration building.

In addition to the interventions on the castle temples, there will also be maintenance, restoration and highlighting of the central cobblestone road and the main side arteries leading to the temples, as well as photographic documentation and placement of publicity plates.
