Great personalities of cinema, television and even Brazilian politics congratulated Wagner Moura and Kleber Mendonça Filho on Saturday (24). The artist was elected the best actor at the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival for his performance in “The Secret Agent”, while the director was laureate with the best direction trophy.
This is the first time a Brazilian has won the men’s interpretation award in the festival’s main competition. With the recognition, a new World Cup mood settled in Brazil, as well as in the “I’m still here” race for the Oscar.
Actor Gabriel Leone, who plays one of the villains in the movie, shared a photo hugging Moura with the caption: “The hug I wanted to give now in my idol and heart friend. Wag is in the place that deserves to be!”.
Actress Maria Fernanda Cândido congratulated actor and director with posts on Instagram. “Most deserved award! Great work by Wagner Moura. Long live the Brazilian cinema!” Wrote actress Maria Fernanda Cândido. “What a joy! What a pride! Congratulations director, very deserved award !!! Live the Recife cinema, live the Brazilian cinema !!.”
“Giants! Wagner Moura becomes the first Brazilian actor to win the male performance award at the Canne Festival! And Kleber Mendonça Filho, won the direction award. Congratulations, Brazil! Live our Brazilian cinema!” Wrote screenwriter and playwright Walcyr Carrasco.
“Absolute pride! Live Kleber Mendonça Filho,” wrote actress Alice Braga in Instagram Stories. Names like Dira Paes, Lúcio Mauro Filho, Barbara Paz and Samara Felippo also shared congratulations in the Stories.
“Best actor in Cannes! Live Wag!” Wrote actor Humberto Carrão in a publication.
Along with a photo of Wagner and Kleber, actress, director and screenwriter Alice Carvalho wrote: “The greatness of who knows where it comes from. Long live the Brazilian cinema that magnifies our corners!”.
At X, former Twitter, President Lula said that today is a day to feel even more proud to be Brazilian and celebrate the recognition that our art has in the world. “The two awards that ‘the secret agent’ recently won at the Cannes Film Festival – best director and best actor – show that our country’s cinema owes nothing to anyone. And we will continue to enchant the audiences and critics around the planet with movies that show our talent, our culture and important chapters of our own history.”

Thanks for always being a source of pride for our country. And ‘the secret agent’ also brought to Brazil the award for best director for Kleber Mendonça Filho. Double victory. Multiple jells.”
Deputy Erika Hilton also congratulated Wagner Moura and Kleber Mendonça Filho. “It fills me with joy to see Brazilian cinema having its deserved recognition and global prestige,” he wrote. “That this motivates us here in Brazil to value and strengthen our cinema, along with the other cultural expressions of our people, including through public policies and state support.”
Also deputy, Tabata Amaral adopted a cheerleader: “It’s from Brazil! The movie ‘The Secret Agent’ has just made history at the Cannes Film Festival, one of the most renowned stages of cinema in the world! Wagner Moura and Kleber Mendonça Filho were the winners of best actor and best director Brazilian cinema!”
