Marcos Mion, 45, was involved in a controversy on social networks on Thursday (5), when he left in defense of humorist Léo Lins, 42. In a text published on Instagram, the presenter of Globo acknowledged that he disagrees with the type of humor practiced by Lins, but considered that censoring it would not be the best solution. After the repercussion, Mion deleted the post.

“Censorship is never good, regardless of context,” wrote the presenter in a new publication, made after the negative repercussion. He stated that his intention was to criticize the curtailment of artistic freedom, even when the contents are, according to his own words, “absurd.”

In the original post, Mion recalled that Leo Lins started on television as editor of the Legendários show, aired by Record. “I loved his texts, his ideas. He wrote very good bases for my programs and soap opera analysis,” he said.

Despite the professional compliment, the presenter said he did not compact with the humorist’s current style. “Within his enormous capacity and genius, he opted for the path of offensive humor, derision, shock and absolute lack of respect. I don’t like and do not respect that kind of humor. But it exists.”

The global also said that it has had disagreements with Leo Lins in the past, including involving jokes about autism, a sensitive theme for Mion, who is the father of an autistic child. “What he writes is m*rda and I already said that fighting with him on the nets,” he said. Still, he stated that he does not consider appropriate that the humorist is the subject of censorship unless his lines actually configure a crime.

In the new text, published after deleting the previous one, Mion tried to clarify his position. “I wrote that I disagree and do not respect what he does. At no time did I say that these absurdities are his genius. What I defended: what censorship is never good. But I do not know all his texts. If they configure a crime, as I wrote, it was his choice.”

Last Tuesday (3), Leo Lins was sentenced to eight years and three months imprisonment for the crimes of article 20 of the Racism Law (“to practice and incite discrimination or prejudice of race, color, ethnicity, religion or national origin”) and Article 88 of the Statute of Persons with Disabilities (“Discrimination of Persons due to their disability”).

Mion’s attempt to make a balance between freedom of expression and responsibility repercussions among followers. While some praised their courage, others pointed to contradiction in defending someone whose mood he himself rejects.
