American actress Ariana DeBouze won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Anita in “West Side Story”, in a remake of Steven Spielberg.

The 31-year-old actress thus succeeded the legendary Rita Moreno, who hails from Puerto Rico and won the same award in 1962, in the first version of the film. “I’m so grateful to you, Anita opened the way for you to thousands of Anites like me,” said the 30-year-old to the 90-year-old star, who cheered her along with the rest of the audience in the room.

She had already secured a Golden Globe, the Actors Guild Award and that of the British Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for her performance. De Bows, Afrolatina and openly gay, declared in November 2021 “I am America”, “I am a member of almost every marginalized community” in the United States.

She prevailed against several possible candidates, Kirsten Dunst in “Dog Power”, Onjuan Ellis in “King Richard”, Judy Dench in “Belfast” and Jesse Buckley in “Lost Daughter”.
