The island of Samothrace is one of the most beautiful and special islands of the entire Aegean. In the heart of the island is the imposing term Saos (1,611 m). Its name means “moon” and according to local tradition it was so named because it hid the moon. This massif covers much of Samothrace, while in many places its wild, virgin nature, in combination with springs, running waters and waterfalls give you the impression that you are in mainland Greece, despite the fact that you are on an island. The mountain is full of hiking routes in forests of plane trees, oaks, pine trees and cedars, which makes it a paradise for outdoor activities.

Undoubtedly the most popular destination is the so -called pedestals, as the locals call them. In essence, these are small lakes, like natural pools, created by torrents and streams in their passage. The crystal clear waters stem from the mountain, flowing into the slopes and create waterfalls and magical lakes, with turquoise waters. Indeed, the entire north side of the island is full of impressive canyons, streams and unique natural monuments. Both the locals and visitors to the island every summer go for swimming on the pedestals to get a solid dose of coolness and rejuvenation.

From the village of Thermas there are many routes in nature, ending in the waterfalls and fairytale lakes. It is advisable to be properly prepared, and if you visit the Fonia Gorge, one of the most idyllic parts of the island, because the degree of difficulty goes up, it is advisable to have an experienced guide with you. The sources of the murderer are at an altitude of 1,350 meters and are accessible only on a path. It is one of the most beautiful parts of Samothrace, with the clear waters forming beautiful ponds, and around there are large, white and smooth rocks, sculpted by the flow of water for hundreds of years.

Every summer, Instagram is filled with immersive images of the island’s pedestals and lush canyons, which best capture the ultimate magic of the landscape. Huge plane trees with thick shade, steep and imposing rocks and a plethora of natural turquoise pools, hiding in the lap of the mountain and magically revealed in front of the traveler’s eyes. Only the river’s buzz, and the fourth of the leaves in the light breeze of the sea are enough to clear the mind of anxiety and unnecessary thoughts.
