The legendary German-Australian fashion photographer Helmut Newton loved to photograph with Polaroid and since the 1970s he was constantly using it. Newton’s Polaroid photos, as well as his colleagues, including Mary Helen Mark, Luigi Giri, Carlo Molino, Olivier Tuscany, Sally Mann and their different techniques are presented at an exhibition in Berlin.
The “Polaroids” exhibition curated by the Helmut Newton Foundation and hosted at the State Museum of Photography highlights the creative process of the photographer from initial ideas to final images.
The Helmut Newton Foundation Archive in Berlin contains hundreds of original Polaroid photos by Helmut Newton.
The instant photos served as visual sketches, helping to control the lighting conditions and improve its compositions, it refers to the description of the exhibition.
The exhibition also features 60 photographers, including from the Ostlicht Polaroid collection in Vienna. Curator Matthias Harder had a complete freedom to draw works from this historical archive, which was rescued by auction in 2010 by Peter Cell, founder of Westlicht Vienna, after Polaroid’s bankruptcy.
The “Polaroids” exhibition will run until August 17, 2025.
