Names considered fundamental in the Brazilian theatrical scene, actresses Cleide Queiroz, 85, and Dirce Thomaz, 73, meet for the first time on stage in “Sugar or the Anne Sisters”, a show that addresses the impact of social structures and aging on women’s lives.

The play, at Itaú Cultural, the debut in the dramaturgy of actor and producer Breno Rosa Gomes, uses metalanguage to show back to the theater of two actresses who relive, on stage, sisters Anne, characters that marked their trajectories.

Mary Anne and Rose Anne are daughters of a decaying bourgeois family and have been educated to meet social expectations, even if it means living pain and frustrations.

With five decades of career, Cleide and Dirce transform the show into a celebration of the protagonism of black women on stage. Photos displayed in the staging honor names such as Ruth de Souza, Zezé Motta and Léa Garcia.

Amid the two veterans, actress Beatriz Nauali, 28, makes the performance narration of the staging.

“Since the rehearsals you have to see that they identify with the actresses they play,” says the playwright, the mother and godmother of Gomes inspired the creation of the text and the dramaturgy began to be thought from the view of two mourning women taking tea, in the face of a rain of sugar – the artistic direction of Eliane Monteiro, from the theater of Vertigo, materializes this image.

“Unique and unmissable chance of seeing the duel of two great actresses closely,” defined the theatrical critic José Cetra Filho about the theatrical meeting of the veterans.

Actress and vocal expression teacher, Cleide debuted on stage with the assembly of “Death and Life Severina”, directed by Silnei Siqueira, in 1969. In 2001, she was nominated for the Shell Award by “Gota D´Água”, under the direction of Gabriel Villela. In the cinema, he acted in films such as “Pixote” (1980), “The Hour of the Star” (1985) and “Domestic” (2001).

A member of the CPT (Antunes Filho Theatrical Research Center), Dirce starred in the show “Xica da Silva” (1988). In 1992 she founded the center of dramaturgy and research on black culture. Since 2017 she plays the writer Carolina Maria de Jesus in the soil “Me and her”. He is also a playwright and researcher.
