A discussion on the return of cultural objects kept to British museums took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Lord Parliament, with a particular emphasis on the Parthenon sculptures. Count Country raised a question to the government about the possibility of amending the applicable laws. He stressed that the sculptures should be exposed to an environment as close as possible to their original context and in the more complete form.
On behalf of the government, Baroness Baroness replied that there are no plans to change the legislation, which does not allow the UK museums to declassify objects, except in exceptional cases – such as human relics over 1,000 years or for objects that have proven to be plundered. He emphasized, however, that there are examples of successful partnerships and lending between museums and countries.
Specifically, referring to the Parthenon sculptures, Baroness reiterated the position that they were legally acquired by the British Museum and that any borrowing agreement would require commitments to return after the expiration of the loan.
Lord McNali in turn argued that the return of the sculptures would strengthen bilateral relations with Greece through “museum diplomacy”. As he added: “” The Deputy Minister has listed the same excuses used by ministers of all parties for 50 years to prevent the Parthenon sculptures from returning. But the role of the museums is changing. We could achieve something great in our relationships with Greece if we found a way to return the sculptures and work with Greece for a large exhibition dedicated to Greek sculpture. This is how modern museums should work – as places of knowledge, respect and awareness of the colonial past. ”
Baronea replied: “The United Kingdom and Greece have strong bilateral relations, based on common values and history. We deeply appreciate friendship between our peoples. I would question the use of the term “excuse”. This is a reason and point of view, not an excuse. “
