In the presence of the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, danced by Metropolitan Monemvasia and Sparta Efstathiou and a crowd of people, the inauguration of the Municipal Museum of Yiannis Ritsos took place in the Castle of Monemvasia.

The conversion of Yiannis Ritsos’ historic house into a museum, after its acquisition by the municipality by the poet’s family, was implemented by funding from the Ministry of Culture, with a budget of 276,000 euros, through a programmatic contract of cultural development with the Municipality of Monemvasia, the Peloponnese Region.

The project included research, recording and museum documentation work, the study and design of the exhibition spaces, the organization and production of the exhibition media, as well as the construction of the final support infrastructure. Through modern exhibition media, digital applications and interactive experiences, the poet’s multifaceted work, personality and indefinite relationship with his hometown are presented.

As Lina Mendoni said in her address, “today is a special day, first of all, for the Monemvasites. It is a special day for all of us who have been nourished with Yannis Ritsos, who belongs to the generation, who lived through the post -revolution and in our school textbooks we learned his poetry. I am really happy that the Ministry of Culture has helped so that the Ritsu family’s house is completed as a museum site and first attributed to the residents of Monemvasia and of course to its thousands of visitors. Today, we are inaugurating the dedicated museum to Yiannis Ritsos, thanks to the joint effort of the Municipality, the Ministry of Culture and of course, thanks to the offer of Mrs. Eris Ritsu, who endowed it with the poet’s personal belongings. “

Lina Mendoni noted that “our policy is to create small museums, shells for the important personalities that defined our modern cultural character. We have inaugurated the Elytis House, we are ready to start the Charles Koun Museum, we are ready to begin the restoration of the Palamas house to create the Palamas Museum. It is, in fact, a wish of a work that in some cities, such as Monemvasia, operate correspondingly small museums, which act as poles, not only culture, not only development, but mainly education, education, teaching. “

As the Minister of Culture pointed out, regarding Ritsos’ love for his homeland, “one of the dipoles of his poetry was the sea on the one hand, and on the other, this indefinable rock. This rock, the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Monemvasia make it accessible to all people. We owe everyone -whether they have mobility problems whether they are obstructed or have gone through the age of youth, to have the right -because it is the right -to climb everyone and to worship, to visit the Church of God the Church of God. “

The residence of Yiannis Ritsos, an architecture with a history of post -Byzantine times, is next to the central gate of the Castle, at the active core of the lower city. With, at times, interventions it carries, mainly from the late 19th to the 20th centuries, the house has strongly maintained the characteristics of the architectural and social history of the place.

Giannis Ritsos, one of the most important Greek poets, with international reputation, acceptance and radiation, was born on May 1, 1909 in Monemvasia. Initially, his family lived opposite the church of Our Lady of Chrysafitissa, but with the birth of the poet, he was transferred to the house near the central gate of the Castle next to the walls. Today the central cobbled path of the castle has the name of the great poet and outside his house dominates his bust. The house of the family of Yiannis Ritsos is located at the entrance of the archaeological site of the Lower Town Monemvasia, on the north side of the superstructure of the central gate complex. It is the first home of the active settlement of the Lower Town, in direct contact and function with its Western Wall and Kouda. Access to the house is made from the central cobbled path of the Lower Town, via a racing arch. Its original core can be reduced to the post -Byzantine times.
