Thaís Vaz, an actress who played the character Flavinha in “Malhação” in 2004, revealed that she lost vision of her left eye after being the victim of an episode of domestic violence.
The case occurred when she was 19, and marked her personal and professional life. Two decades later, she says she decided to turn pain into a play to talk about abusive relationships.
The episode took place during a Carnival holiday in Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro. In an interview with Marie Claire magazine, Thaís reported that she was with friends and then a boyfriend when a discussion ended in tragedy. During the outbreak of anger, he punched a glass window that broke and hit the actress’s eye directly.
“He hit the glass, which broke tightly and hit my eye. It was all very fast, a rush. I didn’t even know what had happened. The impact formed a glass stake, which also pierced his arm. He bled a lot,” he said.
Both were taken to the same hospital in delicate conditions. Thaís recalls the cold service he received. “They put me on a cold stretcher. I was operated for five hours, but I didn’t recover the vision. I had retinal detachment, traumatic cataract, cut in the cornea … All the worst. At first I still saw a little, but I was losing,” he explained.
Thaís also detailed how abusive behaviors began subtly. Control, she said, appeared in things like jealousy and censorship. “I participated in a hidden bikini parade. When he found out, he said, ‘I don’t want girlfriend my parading like that.’ And that’s when he considered himself my boyfriend. The dating request came in that aggressive tone.”
She describes the ex as an adamant and dominant person. “He was the kind who always thought it was right. Even though friends realized how toxic the relationship was. When he came aggressively, I replied, and became a fight. It was a cycle.”
Now Thais prepares the play “Hiena: Laughter over the toxic”, inspired by his story. The show, she said, seeks to talk about instinct, survival and the awakening of women who are abused.
