Sotheby’s auction house has returned the “sacred” jewelry associated with Buddha’s relics in India, after pressure from the Indian government and world -wide Buddhist leaders.
The jewelry carrying gemstones were to be auctioned in Hong Kong in May. But the auction was canceled after diplomatic intervention and threats to legal actions by Delhi.
The Godrej Industries Group based in Mumbai has acquired jewelry, Sotheby’s said.
The house said “happy” that facilitated the return, after two months of negotiations involving the owner, the new buyer and the Indian government. The relics will now be exposed to permanently in Public report in India.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Monti announced the return on Wednesday, referring to a “proud and happy time” and a victory for the country’s cultural heritage. The relics, he said to X, return to their homeland after 127 years.
The Godrej Industries Group, the jewelry buyer, serves more than 1.1 billion consumers worldwide in areas such as consumer goods, real estate, agriculture, financial and chemicals, according to its website.

Valuable jewelry was found in a Stoupa in today’s Uryth Pradesh, India, near the Buddha’s birthplace in 1898 by the English William Claxton Peppe.
Inside the crypt there were 1,800 pearls, rubies, sapphires and gold leaves – buried along with remainsallegedly was the Buddha.
Peppete handed over most of the gems, relics and relics to the Indian government, but for more than a century, other dazzling jewelry remained hidden in a British private collection.
