Although it usually appears on the face, acne can also occur on the throat. Various factors affect its appearance, but, as in the face, there are solutions.
We spoke with the dermatologist-venereologist, Dr. Valia Mousatou and we learned everything about acne on the neck.
What Causes Acne On The Throat? What are the main causes of its occurrence?
In addition to the face that is its main location, acne often occurs on the neck. The causes are the same as acne on the face, the main of which are stress, hormones, heredity and oiliness.
There are, however, other additional causes. It is common to apply greasy products such as body creams, oils and makeup products that are not thoroughly removed. Other factors are some sunscreens, increased sweating, irregular washing (as on the face) and the transfer of oil from long hair. Also, the application of tight synthetic fabrics and irritating fragrances can predispose to acne. Also, oils for massage or physiotherapy as well as the long use of a helmet can affect its appearance. Finally, in men, it is possible for pimples to appear in the beard area after shaving, especially if they are shaved daily.
Is it true that hair care and cleansing products can affect its appearance?
Depending on the hair care habits and their length, acne can be aggravated. For example, using greasy products or silicone products can transfer oils from contact with the throat. Especially if you have skin that is sweaty or prone to acne, this is definitely an aggravating factor.
How can we deal with it at home?
- By changing some small habits we can prevent or improve acne in the neck area.
- Regular, daily washing of the neck along with the face is necessary to remove care products and makeup residues.
- Regular hair washing especially if it is greasy also helps.
- Avoid synthetic fabrics (zivago type)
- Avoid perfumes and oils
- Use of specialized products against acne
For men who develop pimples (pseudo-follicles), the use of special products for shaving helps as well as products that prevent the penetration of hair into the skin, as well as the thinnest shave.
At the same time, the dermatologist prescribes, depending on the case, topical treatment with active substances against acne. The most common are antibiotics, retinoids, benzene peroxide, B-hydroxy acids and azelaic acid. In some cases, systemic oral treatment may be needed.
Are there specific treatments in the doctor’s office that aim to treat acne on the neck?
At the Clinic there are targeted treatments against acne. If there is trapped sebum (eaters), apply cleaning by mechanical removal. Also, special peels with β-hydroxy acids remove dead cells, while the blue light treatment helps to remove the microorganisms that cause inflammation.
Do you have any additional tips on treating acne on the neck?
- Frequent washing (even locally) of objects that come in contact with the neck when possible (helmets, jewelry, scarves, splints, etc.).
- Do not “tease” patients with pimples.
- Avoid sun exposure of acne prone areas to avoid scarring
- Do not rub, shave, mechanically exfoliate patients with areas with pimples.
