Meryl Streep, at age 76 and with more than 70 films in the curriculum, is not afraid to talk about his scene colleagues. Versatility icon, capable of turning into each role almost chameleonically, she recently surprised by telling which actor provided her with the best kiss of her film career.
“He was unique, no one did like him,” confessed the actress when referring to Robert Redford, her romantic pair in the feature film “Between Dois Loves” (1985). The film, based on the book by Danish writer Karen Blixen, became a landmark of the decade and helped further consolidate the prestige of the two actors.
According to information from the British Express website, the actress admitted that during the recordings, she got involved by the partner: “When we arrived at the fifth shot, I was already in love, and I think it shows in the movie.” One of the sequences that most marked the actress’s memory was not exactly a kiss, but the scene in which Redford washed her hair. For her, the moment translated a rare intimacy in the cinema.
“We have seen so many scenes of people making love, but never one with so much love and delicacy,” he reflected. In another excerpt from the interview, he stressed that Redford gathered qualities little explored in male roles of the time: “He’s tender and sensual. We don’t usually see scenes with this kind of sensuality.”
Streep’s enthusiasm was so much that she joked that she didn’t want the filming to end, even in the face of the difficulties of the set. “I wanted them to never end, even though they were surrounded by hippos,” he said with humor.
Although some critics questioned Redford’s performance in the drama, Meryl was categorical in defending him: “It was subtle and perfect.” The partnership between the two not only enchanted the actress, but also won the public.
The success was proven in the awards season. At the 1986 Oscars, “Between Dois Loves” received 11 nominations and won in seven categories, including best film, best director (Sydney Pollack) and best photography. It became one of the great romantic classics of cinema, eternalizing the chemistry between Streep and Redford.
