Minos Matsas, following last year’s sold out, presents on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at the Herod Atticus Conservatory in the second cycle: Rebetika II+ Fado Tango & Blues, the songs of the world: The music traditions from different length and width of the earth expressing their own experiences, Nostalgia, loneliness, love and hope. But music is one. It unites us, vibrates us, touches us, fascinates us, wherever it comes from, it is enough to have truth.
Minos Matsas created a unique musical journey into space and time, where the figures of Vamvakaris, Tsitsani, Papaioannos emerge from the Athens Catalas, on the shores of Mississippi, in Lisbon and reaches the Home Rodrigues and Carlos Gardel. With companions 15 soloists Greeks and foreigners. Costas Triantafyllidis, Dimitra Moraitis and Lina Cardoso Rodrigues, Debora Russ and Eric B. Turner sing.
Rebetiko was born in a socio -political reality and expressed the need for people to escape the difficulties and problems that haunted them. The same can be said about Portugal’s fados who lived 40 years of dictatorship, Argentina’s tango with immigrants who flocked from around the world and made this unique kind of dance and the Blues of the South of America that became human screams against slavery. Each of these musical traditions, although it has its particular cultural and historical backgrounds, shares a world language.
“Rebetika, as well as blues, fado and tango are songs that have passed from generation to generation and their value remains unchanged. They express the pain, the joy, the love, the tendency to flee, but also the suffering of people who unfortunately never end … The songs of the world are screams from side to side are the foundations of our culture. “In a recent interview by the talented Minos Matsas.
“I found them very nice and harmoniously all these musical genres before I deal with music … So last year I said I would do it and I want to present a 2 hour concert to present our own songs and shout performers from different genres to sing their own songs with us. Went well because it was true »he states, and promises to give the public a unique musical experience once again.
Minos Matsas’ relationship with rebetiko is inextricably linked to the history of his family. His grandfather, Minos Matsas, director of the historical Odeon-Parlophone, was a decisive figure for highlighting the species. In difficult times and against social prejudices, he dared to record and release the first songs of Mark Vamvakaris and then support the work of the greatest rebetiko creators. At the same time, he wrote lyrics for timeless songs. After all, the bold covers of Minos Matsas in the songs “You’re My Man”, “The Minor of Dawn”, “Antonis the Varkaris the Seretis” in which his grandfather has written, are well known.
Today, Minos Matsas, with his look at tomorrow, chooses to approach these songs in a different way. He decomposes, reconstitutes, adds new musical places and creates a bridge between his sound then and now.
A complete musical proposition aimed at the true, experiential showdown with a genre that continues to live, inspire and move.
