Mental tolerance is the ability to adapt to difficulties, leading to a calm and happy life.
The American Psychological Association defines it as “the process of coping well when faced with adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, major anxiety attacks – such as family or relationship problems, serious health problems, work or financial stressors.” .
Its application, as easy as it may seem, requires 4 important steps that we must follow.
1. The acceptance of our feelings
All emotions are precious and important. From the feeling of joy to sadness and even hatred. So the first step in achieving mental tolerance is to understand and accept our feelings and not to avoid them. The fear of tomorrow or even death should not affect us but should be accepted as a normal development or reaction in life.
2. The acquisition of a fee or purpose
Mental resilience is built through the existence of a purpose in life. We need a goal to be able to manage the difficulties. Discovering the goal is neither easy nor self-evident and requires constant elaboration.
3. The offer without selfishness
An important step in achieving mental tolerance is supply. The selfless offer that makes us feel good, but without expecting anything in return, because it leads to disappointments. We give for the offer, not for the receipt.
4. Forgiveness and gratitude
The genuine forgiveness of those who have caused us pain in one way or another is comforting and valuable to our evolution. Let us consider, in addition to the injustices and difficulties we have experienced, how many things we are grateful for every day and we will immediately feel the feeling of fullness and reason for existence.
