A large clay amphorae allegedly coming from the maritime area off Toroni in ChalcidiceIt is presented for the first time at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, as part of the Exhibition Institution entitled “New Operations / New Approaches” (1 Oct-31 Dec).
This is a large commercial/metaphorical pseudo -Mycenaean amphorae Late Bronze Age A single sample of its kind in the museum’s pottery collection “which was probably used for storage and transportation of simple or aromatic oil. Elizabeth Papanikolaou handed over to the Museum in 2018. Its surface, covered by marine organisms, shows that the vessel had been in a calm and dark marine environment for years, that is, in deep waters.
“If his (alleged) origin from the Gulf of Toroni responds to reality, then it is the northernmost sample of this type of amphorae in the Aegean. In this case, his deposition at sea is, with an event of the Mycenaean times? B.C. With an unknown shipwreck, or anchorage, or forced cargo rejection due to a seawater? Or, with a secondary movement during modern times, with the vessel e.g. to be carried there caught in the fishermen’s nets? What does its petrographic and chemical analysis indicate as its possible origin and center of production? Can we propose a hypothetical marine route based on studies on navigation channels in the prehistoric Aegean? What coastal positions of the Late Bronze Age in the Toroneos Gulf could be a final destination or intermediate station on this supposed route? It is almost inevitable, finally, an archaeological find that does not come from a safe excavation ensemble “such as this amphora” generates more interpretive questions, rather than providing clear answers, “the archaeological museum said in a statement by inviting the visitors to visit the visitors to seek out Recently and for the first time they are presented to the scientific and general public, either recovered from the shelves of the warehouses to expose themselves in the light of a new approach, after a rehabilitation process, a new interpretation or after new scientific data.
International Congress for Amphoranders

The event aims to contact researchers from Greece and abroad, who will be shared with colleagues and the public new discoveries, and will discuss issues of production, dissemination, distribution and use of commercial amphorae in the Aegean and the wider area.
