On the occasion of the Great Concert at the Pallas Theater on October 14th, Sophia Manu talked to the skai.gr For her voice and soul Vebofor the spiritual starting point of the project “The voice that defeated fascism » – An idea of Elder Ephraim of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi – and for the importance of folk song today, at a time when values are tested and women are called again to stand strong and creative.
– Mrs Manou, on October 14th you go to Pallas’ stage for the concert “The Voice That Won Fascism”. How was this work born?
The idea came through a moving proposal by Elder Ephraim of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi, who envisioned a record and a show that will honor the voice and soul of Sofia Vebo. It was he who paved the way, giving us the inspiration to transfer this message to today. So we created a project that talks not only about the past, but also about the power Greece needs today.
– What does Sofia Vebo mean to you as a woman and artist?
Vebo was a phenomenon. At a time when everything around her collapsed, she stood up and animated a whole people. She was a woman, but she didn’t use it as a weakness -it made it a source of power. He sang for his homeland, for hope, for life. And today, at a time when values are being tested, I believe that the woman must stand on her feet again, stand up and remember that she is fake to create -not to endure suffering. This is Vebo’s true legacy.
– You, in turn, have served the good folk song for years. How do you experience this today?
The folk song is the soul of Greece. It’s not fashion, nor a scene. It’s a way to exist. I have learned from a young age to respect and serve it, as the great creators have given us: Theodorakis, Xarhakos, Markopoulos, people who loved the country beyond parties and ideologies. I consider this tradition to continue, with honesty and responsibility.
– What is, in your opinion, what Vebo’s work is doing timeless?
Vebo was singing with truth. He did not need to impress – he needed to encourage. Her voice carried hope, bravery, faith in man. And this is something that does not wear out over time. Every season has its difficulties; what is missing today is honesty. Vebo reminds us of what it means to sing not about glory, but for man and homeland.
– What are your next plans after Pallas?
There are many new ideas and beautiful suggestions, but above all there is a need to continue what we started. The show for Vebo will also travel to other cities, and new music works are being prepared. At the same time, I am aiming for an open invitation to young people to come close, to enter a sincere dialogue through music and create new collaborations. For the only way art remains alive – when it unites generations and gives continuity
The show
The songs are interpreted in a unique way by Sofia Manou. The 10 -member Orchestra “Canon” under the direction of the great composer and guitarist Manolis Androulidakis and his artistic direction George Demeli.
Through the narrative of Natalia Dragoumi and Vasilis Traiforounephew of Sofia Vebo and Mimi Traiforou, as well as through the last texts of the last biographical book “M. Trayphos- S. Vebo: Greek Kids’, the viewer lives with glee unknown aspects of the life of the great performer.
Participate, the 50 -member mixed youth choir of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens under the direction of Paul Cord and the 80 -member choir “Choeur du cœur of the Greek -French school Saint Joseph”, under her direction Iphigenia Kouroussi and Anastasios Sidiropouloswhere with their voices they weave a moving carpet of memory and hope.
The proceeds will be donated to the Galilee Relief Care Unit.
