Today, Wednesday 29 October at 2:40 p.m., the journalistic team of “Wherever Greece is” broadcasts live from Kos and Leros. From the studio, Yiannis Tsimitselis coordinates.
No contracted microbiological laboratories with EOPYY remains the Kos from November 2024. The private microbiologists of the island stopped their collaboration with EOPYY, citing the increased financial burdens which – as they say – make it unprofitable to continue the contracts. The Kos hospital has now taken over a large part of the examinations, however the needs of an island with a population of around 40,000 inhabitants cannot be fully met.
In tourist islands such as Kos and Leros, substitute teachers face serious housing problems. They are informed about the school they are assigned to just a few days before the consecration and then their Calvary begins. In the case of Michalis Petavrakis, things were much more complicated, as while he presented himself in Tilos, as he was asked, when he got there he was told that a mistake had been made and he had to go to Leros.
In recent years the Leros is developing into a leading diving tourism destinationwith shipwrecks that are fascinating witnesses to recent history. The Italians had turned most of the island into a large air force base, with underground and ground facilities. During World War II, the Germans turned against Leros, which was defended by Italians and English. The Battle of Leros which lasted 52 days left the most wreckage in the world after Normandy. Konstantinos Kouvas is a scuba diving instructor and a pioneer of diving tourism in Greece.
