Do our carbohydrates eventually make us fat?

by

Perhaps the most talked about topic around diet and weight loss. The carbohydrate group is definitely in the spotlight every time you start a weight loss effort.

I am wrong;! I do not think. You have definitely mentioned “I will not eat bread and pasta for a month and I will definitely avoid them in the evening”. But let’s unravel the “tangle” around carbohydrates, and then let’s see what their contribution is to weight loss.

What are carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are complex organic compounds that, along with fats and proteins, are the so-called macronutrients you get from your food. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy in the body and for this reason it is recommended that 45-60% of the daily energy intake come from carbohydrates in healthy children and adults.

Why are they so important?

Being the main source of energy, our carbohydrates are necessary to fulfill both our organic and cellular needs, such as normal brain function, the integrity of the central nervous system and muscle movement.

What are carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are divided into 2 major categories, depending on “how fast” they break down, into simple and complex. Thus, simple carbohydrates are broken down quickly, provide immediate energy and raise blood sugar levels faster than complex ones, which are broken down and absorbed more slowly and smoothly raise blood sugar levels.

Simple Carbohydrates:

• Molasses

• Agave / Maple Syrup

• Honey

• Fruit juices

• Soft drinks

• Brown & White Sugar

• Spoon sweets

• Various sweets

• Pastries based on white flour & sugar

Complex Carbohydrates:

• Vegetables

• Fruit

• Legumes

• Whole grains

• Brown rice

• Oats

• Corn

• Potato

• Peas

• Nuts

Do carbs make you fat?

In fact, what is consumed in excess in our body is converted into fat, resulting in obesity. It is important to remember that when the calories you take in are more than you expend, then you are in an energy surplus and your scales are increasing. Therefore, carbohydrates do not make you fat. But over-consumption of them, like fats or proteins, yes they get fat.

Why do I lose less weight if I cut out carbs?

In the short term, it does happen. When carbohydrates are reduced this is likely to happen, as carbohydrates also hold water molecules. This of course has an impact on the scales but for a while. In the long run, you will see that this loss, which is mainly water, will either remain constant, regardless of whether you are completely deprived of carbohydrates, or it will be recovered by consuming even a small amount of carbohydrates.

Is blocking carbs a safe way to eat?

For sure, I will answer no. According to the literature on a variety of popular diets that lack carbohydrates, it seems that the body experiences incredible weakness, fatigue, dizziness and headaches, which are very similar to the symptoms of the flu, while more serious side effects occur, such as stomach pain, stomach ache. vomiting, poor sleep quality but also brain dysfunction.

So does it matter if I cut out carbs or limit them to my dinner?

According to the studies so far, it does not matter in weight loss, if you limit carbohydrates or if you do not consume them in your dinner. What matters is that you are in a calorie deficit. Clearly, it plays an important role to consume more complex carbohydrates, always according to your energy needs, and to follow in general, a healthy and balanced diet and exercise.

Therefore, I would suggest you the next time you give up your favorite pasta for the sake of a few pounds, to reconsider and instead, consume everything in moderation. That way, you will never feel deprived, you will be full of energy and you will be able to enjoy everything you crave. Clearly, to achieve this, the contribution of a nutritionist is crucial, so that it is done correctly and individually.

Diet is not a punishment, and as long as you look at it that way, it is doomed to fail any form of “diet”. As I always say, the right quality and quantity in the diet, combined with patience and perseverance is the key to success. There are no magic ways, or at least they are not safe for your health.
