The story of the new movie ‘Happening’ takes place in France of the ’60s, but it is much more relevant than it should be

by

Audrey Diwan’s new film is the highly successful Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival, which has now begun its journey across Europe. Happening is a story that focuses on abortion in France in the 1960s. However, the “then” that we watch in the film, is not far from the “now” that many countries around the world know today.
Happening follows the story of Anne, a young student from France

We are specifically in 1963, a year that was to change a lot in the history of the country. Anne is a young student who loves college and dreams of becoming a writer. Together with her friends they try to have fun but also to discuss what concerns them. Everything goes smoothly and Anne remains committed to her goal, until after the summer she discovers that she is pregnant.

Naturally, her world is collapsing, as she knows very well that the arrival of a child will delay or even cancel her plans for the future. However, this pregnancy seems inevitable, as in France abortions are still banned and punishable by imprisonment. But Anne is determined that she does not want to give birth to a child and does everything in her power to do so – even to the point of endangering her physical integrity.

The film is based on the memoir of Annie Ernaux

In a semi-autobiographical book, Annie Ernaux in 2000 talked about her own experience with an unwanted pregnancy at a young age. This year, in the film, Anamaria Vartolomei conveys with her icy look and the various manifestations of her feelings the agony of a young woman who has to go through such a situation. Anne faces the lies or even the ridicule of the doctors, but also the distrust of her friends who do not want to play their freedom crown letters for her abortion.

Happening comes at a time when the debate over abortion is more intense than ever, in many countries around the world. But it is a unique reminder that every woman should have complete freedom for her body. Something that should be taken for granted until today, but remains in demand.
