Big Brother Brasil 22 (Globo) comes to an end this Tuesday (26) with an unprecedented outcome. This is because there has never been an all-male final, just as there has never been a final with only members of the Camarote. But the season also stands out for stopping the audience escalation of the 2020 and 2021 editions, despite maintaining expressive numbers.
The season that will give R$ 1.5 million to Arthur Aguiar, Douglas Silva or Paulo André, had, from its premiere, on January 17, until April 21, an average of 22 audience points on the PNT (National Television Panel) , where each point is equivalent to 258 thousand households in the 15 largest metropolitan regions of the country.
The number is lower than the 24 average points of the BBB 20 and the 27 average points that the program gave to the broadcaster in 2021. Even so, the BBB 22 was the most watched program on Globo and on Brazilian television this year, according to the broadcaster, accounting for more than 155 million viewers.
Last year, in which Juliette, Camilla de Lucas and Fiuk reached the final, the reality show had an average share of 51%. This means that more than half of the televisions turned on at the time of the attraction tuned in to the participants’ adventures. A little lower, the average participation in 2022 was 49%.
The audience peak of the current season took place on March 8, during the program in which the influencer Jade Picon was eliminated in the Paredão disputed with Jessilane and Arthur Aguiar. There were 29 audience points in Greater SP, with each point equivalent to 74 thousand households) and 34 points in RJ (each point corresponds to 47 thousand households)
Nothing compared, however, to the elimination of Karol Conká in 2021, a participant who left the house with 99.17% of the votes, the biggest rejection in the history of Big Brother Brazil. When the singer left, the audience in São Paulo was 38 points (each point was equivalent to about 76 thousand households).
Furthermore, participation was 62%, a figure that had not been reached since the BBB 10. In Rio de Janeiro, the numbers were also impressive: 40 points were registered (where each point corresponded to about 50 thousand households) with 64% of participation.
Not that Jade’s elimination was in vain. According to data released by Globo, Paredão was the second largest in the history of the program, accounting for 698,199,078 absolute votes and 3.5 million votes per minute. It only loses to the hot seat between Manu Gavassi, Felipe Prior and Mari Gonzalez on BBB 20, which gave the program more than 1.5 billion votes and 3.6 million votes per minute.
Part of the television audience may have migrated to streaming, since, until April 19, Globoplay recorded a 61% growth in logged in accounts when compared to the same period in the last edition, according to the broadcaster.
On Twitter, the numbers are also expressive, although more modest than in the previous edition. Since its debut, more than 123.4 million tweets about BBB 22 have been generated. In 2021, the number was around 172 million close to the final.
This year, says Globo, the new reality show host, Tadeu Schmidt, was one of the highlights on the platform. His name appeared for 184 hours in the most commented topics in Brazil and 143 hours in the most commented topics in the world.
However, given the resounding results of recent editions, the volume of tweets and Schmidt’s prominence did not prevent Internet users from linking the term BBB 22 to the word “flopar”, slang for failure. This is what commented, for example, fans of the program dissatisfied with Arthur Aguiar’s False Wall. The jargon even came out of the mouths of those who were in the house. At a party outside the reality show, former participant Tiago Abravanel declared that BBB 22 “was the most flop in history”.
FINALISTS’ TRAJECTORY
On April 17, Jessi’s elimination from BBB 22 confirmed that the issue would have a male champion. This hasn’t happened since the BBB 15, when Cézar got the better of it. The number of male and female champions in the program’s history will also be equal.
Paulo André was the first to win a spot in the final, winning an endurance test that lasted more than 19 hours. A track and field star, he entered the house as a semifinalist in the 100 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a silver medalist at the 2019 Pan American Games.
It had about 100,000 followers at the beginning of the reality show, a number that jumped to 7.6 million. On Google Trends, the peak of searches for his name during the reality show took place on February 12, when the athlete kissed Jade Picon.
The relationship with the influencer marked her trajectory in the house. The two got close in the first days of the program, but Picon only let the kiss happen almost a month later. The youtuber has already said that she should not continue the romance outside the house, but PA should take from BBB 22 her friendship with surfer Pedro Scooby, who she approached and has already declared himself best friend.
Paulo André’s strong supporters should face another strong one, that of Arthur Aguiar. Carioca, famous for acting in Malhação (Globo) and in the Brazilian version of Rebelde (Record), he entered the house not only late because of a diagnosis of Covid-19, but also with controversies in his luggage.
In June 2020, Aguiar’s wife, Maíra Cardi, went public to say that she was in an abusive and toxic relationship with the actor. Aguiar admitted betrayal, but denied that he was abusive to his wife. Despite the troubled breakup, they announced in October last year that they had resumed.
It was Cardi who earned the actor the nickname “bread” on BBB 21. Also a former BBB and fitness influencer, she complained on social media about the excess carbohydrate that her husband ingested in reality. The complaint turned into jokes and memes on social media.
Arthur was walled up seven times and won the edition’s False Wall. In the confines of the Secret Room, he watched colleagues’ conversations, which further shook the complicated relationship he had with the Grunge Room brothers. Since entering the house, Arthur tried to get close to Pedro Scooby, Gustavo, Douglas and Paulo André, but he often said that he played alone and got into clashes with the allies.
Another actor from Rio de Janeiro, Douglas Silva, is the third to compete for the grand prize. First Brazilian to be nominated for an Emmy, in 2005, he became famous with his work in the series “Cidade dos Homens” (Globo) and in the film “City of God”, in 2002.
In the role of DG, nickname he won at BBB 22, he starred in a twist in reality. After being crowned the first Leader of the edition, he was accused of hiding his game and even received 11 plaques with pejorative adjectives from colleagues during a Game of Discord. He almost left the house in the third Paredão, played with Naiara Azevedo and Arthur.
Alerted by Gustavo, who brought external information through Casa de Vidro, Douglas then became more strategic and reached the final practically unharmed. His trajectory was marked by the rivalry he had with singer Linn da Quebrada, the first transvestite to survive a Paredão and to gain a lead in the program.
But Douglas’ 3.2 million followers on Instagram may indicate that his fans will succumb to those of Paulo André and Arthur, who have 7.6 and 13.2 million followers, respectively. It remains for the public to decide.
