Applications for the Octavio Frias de Oliveira Award, granted by ICESP (Octavio Frias de Oliveira Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo), entered the last week. Interested parties have until next Tuesday (31), at 11:59 pm, to register for the 13th edition of the award that bears the name of the institution’s patron. The initiative is carried out in partnership with Grupo Folha.
The laurel in honor of the then publisher of Sheetwho died in 2007, was created to recognize and encourage contributions from Brazilian researchers and other professionals working in the oncology field.
For the category Research in Oncology, original projects published in scientific journals in 2021 and 2022, with the main author working in a national Research and/or Teaching Institution, can be registered.
As for the Technological Innovation in Oncology category, original works that were published in scientific journals or patents that were deposited from 2020 to 2022 are accepted. Once again, the researcher must work in a national institution.
In addition, an Outstanding Personality in Oncology will be awarded. The prize for each category is R$ 20 thousand, in addition to a certificate.
The laureates are chosen by a Judging Committee, made up of scientists and members of society that deal with the subject.
Entries must be made through the form available on the website www.premiooctaviofrias.com.br. An abstract, up to 600 characters long, understandable to the general population, must be sent along with it.
The award ceremony will take place on August 5 of this year, still without a defined location.
Last year, the Laureate in Oncology Research went to research that evaluated how physical activities could combat cachexia, a condition related to cancer that can worsen it. In Technological Innovation in Oncology, the winning work sought the development of a new test that could accelerate the diagnosis and follow-up of colorectal cancer.
The Outstanding Personality award went to Hugo Aguirre Armelin, biologist, researcher and responsible for the discovery of the molecule related to the fibroblast growth factor.
