Hepatitis in children, monkeypox and dengue on the health alert list; listen to podcast

by

After more than two years of fighting Covid, other diseases are dividing the attention of health authorities: a still mysterious hepatitis, monkeypox and, especially in Brazil, the old known dengue.

More than 600 cases of this new hepatitis have been recorded worldwide, with 15 deaths. The disease mainly affects healthy children severely, and some have needed liver transplants. In Brazil, 64 suspects are investigated in 15 states.

The Health Ministry says it is also monitoring the version of smallpox transmitted from monkeys. It has mainly concerned European countries and has not yet been registered in Brazil.

Meanwhile, the country faces a new dengue outbreak, which is already the worst of the decade in five states and the Federal District and affects regions that did not have the problem at this time of year, such as Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.

In this Wednesday’s episode (25), Café da Manhã talks to microbiologist and president of the Instituto Questão de Ciência Natália Pasternak about the new diseases that concern health authorities around the world and what explains outbreaks of diseases already known in Brazil.
