The STJ (Superior Court of Justice) ruled this Wednesday (8) that health plan operators are not required to cover procedures that are not on the ANS (National Supplementary Health Agency) list. With that, the court changed an understanding that had existed for more than two decades – which was seen as a victory for the operators.
By 6 votes to 3, the STJ determined that the document is exhaustive, that is, it contains all the obligations of the companies — and not just a minimum reference of exams, therapies and surgeries that must be provided.
In this Friday’s episode (10), Café da Manhã explains how health insurance coverage works, analyzes what changes for patients with the STJ’s decision and discusses who should be most affected by it. The podcast talks to Ligia Bahia, professor at UFRJ and specialist in the private health market.
