Rio experiences an increase in Covid cases and already has a queue for beds

by

Like the rest of the country, the state of Rio de Janeiro was also affected by the new wave of Covid-19, which puts pressure on care and already results in lines for hospitalization, although the scenario is still far from the severity observed at the beginning of the year.

In the week of 5/28 to 6/5, the daily average of people waiting for Covid-19 beds was 17 for the ICU and 14 for the infirmary, according to data from the State Department of Health. From the beginning of May until the 27th, this number was around five people.

Between this Thursday (9) and Friday (10), the median waiting time for a bed was 8 hours in the case of the ICU and three hours for the ward.

In early May, two to three requests for beds were registered per day. In the week of 5/28 to 6/5, the daily average of requests rose to 13 for the ICU and 12 for the ward.

In the same week, the daily average of consultations for flu syndrome in the UPAs (Emergency Care Units) in the state was 489, an increase of 14% compared to the previous week and 36.5% compared to the first week of May. .

The capital had 135 hospitalized for Covid-19 in the SUS network on Friday night (10) – the highest number since February. According to the Municipal Health Department, 85% of these people have their vaccination schedule delayed.

This Friday, the combined occupancy of the ICU and ward beds was at 51% and there were eight people waiting in line.

The positivity rate of Covid-19 tests has also been growing since the end of April. At that time, about 5% of antigen tests in the state were positive. In the last week, this percentage was 28%.

Faced with the pressure on care, the government reversed 40 beds for Covid-19 at Hospital Estadual Dr. Ricardo Cruz, being 30 in the ward and 10 in the ICU. The measure was taken between the 4th and 6th of June.

The state states that the action can be extended to other units, according to demand. “The plan provides for the activation of levels from certain epidemiological scenarios. Based on this plan, at each activation level, the coping measures to be taken are defined”, says the state.

Despite the increase in the number of hospitalizations, the Government of Rio de Janeiro is not gathering and disclosing data on bed occupancy.

The State Department of Health argues that the occupancy rate was being reported by the municipalities, which stopped passing on the information when most beds were no longer exclusive to the disease. “For this reason, this data is being reviewed to be informed again”, said the folder in a note sent to the report last Tuesday (7).

On June 3, the Undersecretary of Surveillance and Primary Health Care sent a technical note to the 92 municipalities with guidelines on testing for Covid-19 in the state. The text warns that basic and emergency care units maintain the offer of rapid antigen test for all cases of flu syndrome.

The government also reinforces the recommendation for the population to complete the vaccination schedule.
