Cases reported to the WHO have increased by 30% in the past fortnight, according to a statement.
THE World Health Organisation announced today that Covid-19 remains global health emergencynearly 2-1/2 years after it was first proclaimed.
THE Emergency Committeemade up of independent experts, said in a statement that the increasing number of cases, the continued evolution of the virus and the strain on health services in some countries mean the situation remains urgent.
The outbreaks reported to the WHO increased by 30% over the past fortnight, the statement said, although the committee accepted that increased immunity in the population, mainly from vaccines, showed a “disconnection” of cases from hospitalizations and deaths.
The Director-General of the WHO Tedros Andanom Gebregesus accepted the committee’s recommendation.
His health service UN first declared the highest level of alert, known as a public health emergency of international concern, for Covid-19 on January 30, 2020. Such a designation can help accelerate research, funding and international public health measures to contain disease.
