The roughly 50 countries that belong to WHO Europe are asked to give a second booster dose to “moderately to severely immunocompromised persons aged 5 years and older and their immediate environment”.
It is also recommended that countries consider offering a second booster dose to specific high-risk groups, such as the elderly, healthcare workers and pregnant women, possibly in combination with seasonal influenza vaccine where available.
Vaccination of the entire population remains “a priority in Europe,” WHO Europe director Hans Kluge recalled in a statement.
In late June, the WHO warned that it expected an increased number of Covid-19 cases this summer and asked countries to monitor the situation, after cases tripled in a month.
On Monday, the European Union’s health services also recommended that a second booster dose for Covid-19 be given to all people over the age of 60. Many European countries already give this second booster dose to the elderly, even before international organizations recommend it.
In the countries of the WHO Europe zone, the number of cases has registered a large increase since the end of May. In the last 7 days the cases reached almost 3 million. Many European countries are also reporting an increase in hospitalizations linked to Covid-19, however the death toll remains relatively low.
