The winners of the 13th edition of the Octavio Frias de Oliveira Award will be announced this Friday (5th). The award can be seen, from 18:00h, on the website of the Sheet.
The award is an initiative of ICESP (São Paulo State Cancer Institute Octavio Frias de Oliveira) in partnership with Grupo Folha and is named after the then publisher of Sheetwho died in 2007. The awards event takes place annually on the birth date of patron Octavio Frias de Oliveira, “your” Frias, as he liked to be called.
The purpose of the award is to encourage and reward the production of national knowledge in the prevention and fight against cancer.
“The award recognizes the excellence of Brazilian science. It provides a strong incentive to young scientists, who have the opportunity to present their line of research and gain recognition in the scientific community”, says Paulo Hoff, president of the ICESP’s board of directors. “It is an honor for ICESP to award professionals who are constantly focused on curing cancer.”
“There is no progress outside of science”, says Sérgio Dávila, Editor-in-Chief at Sheet. “The ICESP award is a recognition of this fact and a confirmation of the excellence of Brazilian research. Sheet is very proud to be part of this initiative that honors the memory of publisher Octavio Frias de Oliveira.”
The event, this year, will take place in person again and will be in the ICESP auditorium, for guests, with subsequent transmission by Sheet. In 2020 and 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the in-person ceremony did not take place and the awards were made at online events.
This year’s ceremony will be attended by Dávila, for Sheetby Hoff, who chaired the commission for the 13th edition of the award, by the superintendent of the HC (Hospital das Clínicas), Antonio José Pereira, by the director of the USP School of Medicine, Tarcísio Eloy de Barros, by the president-director of the Fundação Faculdade de Medicina Medicine, Arnaldo Hossepian Salles Lima Junior, and the president of CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development), Evaldo Ferreira Vilela.
This year’s event will be led by a reporter from Sheet specialized in health Cláudia Collucci. She will also mediate a conversation circle, which will take place at the ceremony, between the award winners.
Annually, ICESP and the Sheet award national oncology scientists who stood out in the categories Research in Oncology and Technological Innovation in Oncology. In addition, there is the traditional award for Outstanding Personality in Oncology, in which illustrious characters such as doctor Drauzio Varella (2019), columnist for the Sheetand Ana Amélia Lemos (2017), rapporteur and author of several laws dealing with cancer in the SUS and in health plans.
Applications for the 13th edition closed in May this year.
After registration, the laureate names are chosen by a commission made up of representatives from ICESP, the USP School of Medicine, the Hospital das Clínicas da USP, Fapesp (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo), the Academia Nacional of Medicine, ABC (Brazilian Academy of Sciences), CNPq, Fosp (Fundação Oncocentro de São Paulo) and the Sheet.
The scientist awarded in each category receives a certificate and R$ 20 thousand.
