“Walk 10 minutes a day,” say seniors experts
An hour of walking a week, or about 10 minutes a day, is associated with longer life in people 85 and older, reducing the risk of death from any cause, a new South Korean scientific study shows.
The researchers, led by Dr. Moo-Niyun Jin of Inje University Sanggye Paik Hospital in Seoul, who made the announcement at a European Society of Cardiology conference in Barcelona, studied 7,047 people over the age of 85 (mean age 87 years – the 68% women), regarding the time they spent in slow or fast walking, as well as in other physical activities (cycling, running, etc.).
13% walked more than three hours per week, 9% two to three hours, 12% one to two hours, 8% less than one hour and 57% did not walk at all in their free time. 15% did moderate physical activity at the same time, while 11% high intensity.
The study found that, relative to physically inactive older adults, those who walked at least one hour per week in total had about a 40% lower risk of dying from a cardiovascular or other cause.
“Adults, as they age, are increasingly unlikely to be as physically active as recommended. Our study shows that walking for one hour is enough to benefit a person over 85 years old. “To put it simply, walk 10 minutes a day,” said Dr. Jin.
“Walking is associated with a lower chance of death in older adults, regardless of whether they do any other moderate-to-vigorous physical activity at all. The main message is to keep walking throughout your life,” he added.
