A total of 123 domestic cases of West Nile virus infection in Greece have been diagnosed since the beginning of the 2022 season, until August 30, according to the weekly epidemiological report of the EODY.

Of the 123 cases, 74 had CNS manifestations (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis) and 49 had mild manifestations (eg, febrile illness)/ no CNS manifestations.

According to the EODY, during the last week, from the previous weekly report to today, 36 new cases were diagnosed/declared. 11 deaths have been recorded in patients infected with the virus, aged over 77 years.

Cases of West Nile virus infection have been recorded in settlements in the Metropolitan Unit of Thessaloniki and in the Regional Units of Imathia, Kilkis, Pella, Pieria, Halkidiki, Serres, Trikala and Larissa.

It is worth noting that according to the results of a seroepidemiological study conducted in 2010, for each case of West Nile virus infection with CNS involvement, there are approximately 140 people infected with the virus (with mild symptoms or asymptomatic).

Epidemiological surveillance of the disease, the timely implementation of appropriate integrated mosquito control programs and the adoption of personal protection measures against mosquitoes are the most appropriate measures to control the disease, emphasizes EODY.
