by

A team of specialists from different areas participates this Friday (2) in the debate “Suicide and its impacts: prevention and postvention strategies”. The meeting takes place in person at the Fadisp (Autonomous Faculty of Law) auditorium, in Pinheiros, in the west of São Paulo, from 9 am to 1:30 pm. Participation is free, but registration on the Sympla website is required.

There will also be online broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Falla Saúde Mental platform, which organizes the event.

“Stigma, taboo and the culture of silence about suicide are three aspects that limit preventive treatment and prevent facing the issues that involve this delicate, painful and multifactorial subject”, says psychologist Márcia Barone, co-founder of Falla Mental health.

The meeting is structured around four main themes: risk factors, statistical data and prevention strategies; bereaved survivors: the singularities of bereavement by suicide; the importance of postvention (family, schools, companies) and building alternatives to change the current scenario.

In addition to Barone, the speakers are psychologist Karen Scavacini, CEO of Instituto Vita Alere, Major Diógenes Munhoz, officer of the São Paulo Fire Department and creator of the Suicide Approach and Attempts Course, psychiatrist Luiz Eduardo Siqueira, co-founder of Falla Saúde Mental, psychologist João Paulo Gotardo, psychiatrist Gilberto Labônia, survivor Viviane Simmer, survivor Victória Almeida, administrator of the Instagram profile Não Ideia Vale Uma Vida (@nehuma_ideia_vale_uma_vida), and Father Lício Araújo Vale, who specializes in prevention of suicide and researcher on grief and appreciation of life.

Suicide is an important public health problem, with impacts on society as a whole. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), it is estimated that more than 700,000 people die by suicide in the world annually, being the fourth leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29 years.

According to the Ministry of Health, there were 112,230 suicide deaths in Brazil between 2010 and 2019, with a 43% increase in the annual number of deaths from 9,454 in 2010 to 13,523 in 2019.
