“We are not there, but the end is in sight,” said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The world has never been better placed to end the COVID-19 pandemic, the head of the World Health Organization said, calling on countries to continue their efforts against the virus that has killed more than six million people.
“We are not there yet. But the end is in sight,” WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in an online press conference.
Deaths from COVID-19 last week were the fewest since March 2020, the UN agency said.
While WHO expects future waves of COVID-19 infections to continue, the world has tools at its disposal such as vaccines and antiviral drugs to prevent serious infections, said Maria Kerkhove, the agency’s technical officer for COVID-19.
Cases of monkeypox are also on the decline, but Tedros urged countries to continue the fight.
“As with COVID-19, this is not the time to relax or let our guard down,” he said.
