How Africa Faces Immunization Inequality and Covid-19; listen to podcast

by

With the discovery of the omicron variant by scientists in South Africa, the world turned its attention to the pandemic on the African continent — but the first reaction of many governments was to close the borders to countries in the region and suspend flights, a measure criticized by the WHO ( World Health Organization).

With global unequal access to vaccines, Africa still has few doses and a slow immunization campaign. While nearly 57% of the world’s population took at least one dose, the continent has 10% of the population on one dose and 7% on two. This scenario facilitates the development of new variants, which put at risk the fight against the pandemic worldwide.

In this Thursday (9) episode, Café da Manhã talks with biologist Augusto Paulo Silva, a researcher for African countries at Fiocruz’s Center for International Relations in Health, about how the continent faces Covid-19.
