#Hashtag: Freedom or life? Debate dominates networks after Queiroga’s speech

by
This Saturday (11), the 5-day quarantine will apply to unvaccinated travelers entering Brazil. Contrary to the vaccine passport and the mandatory use of masks, the Health Minister, Marcelo Queiroga, told the press this Wednesday (8) that vaccination “has worked because we respect individual freedoms.” He quoted President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and said that “sometimes it’s better to lose your life than to lose your freedom.”

Since then, social media has gained criticism of the statement, with many users remembering the

more than 615,000 killed by Covid-19 in Brazil.

Despite the controversies, Queiroga’s position is nothing new. Although massive vaccination is important to contain the spread of the coronavirus, on other occasions Queiroga had already criticized mandatory measures, including defending an ordinance that prohibited the dismissal of employees who did not want to be vaccinated.

Freedom for whom? Questions about the concept of freedom and to whom it applies also gained ground.

Charge mocked the speech.

A famous phrase from the character Chaves was also recovered.

President Bolsonaro’s sympathy with figures like Ustra, who was a torturer during Brazil’s military dictatorship, was the target of criticism.

Scholarship holders consider that there is no freedom in Brazil. The culprit? The STF (Supreme Federal Court).

Mentions of cinema classics served to illustrate the concern of internet users.

Long live democracy? Supporters of Queiroga and Bolsonaro’s position support criticism of the vaccination passport and mandatory quarantine.
