Sculptra, a collagen biostimulator, tightens the skin and lifts the butt

Lifting the butt and tightening areas such as the belly and thighs are some of the promises of Sculptra, the commercial name of one of the collagen biostimulators that have become more popular after being used by celebrities such as Sabrina Sato and Anitta.

Used for over a decade to firm the skin and promote a lifting effect on the face and neck, the products are injected at strategic points on the body to reduce sagging. In addition to it, derived from polylactic acid, there is also Radiesse, a substance that comes from calcium hydroxyapatite.

“The biostimulators act on the dermis, and not on the muscle. They make skin that remains flaccid even with a lot of weight training firmer, but they do not replace physical exercises”, says Herbeth Sobral, dermatologist at SBD (Brazilian Society of Dermatology) who works in Clínica Mais, in São Paulo.

Collagen is a protein naturally produced by the human body. Among its functions are the support and firmness of the skin. As production decreases after the age of 25, the fabrics become more flaccid.

To stop this action, doctors use biostimulators in regions that show the action of time: in the abdomen, to correct the so-called “sad belly button”; on the inner thighs and arms; and on the back of the hands, where the skin is very thin and wrinkles more quickly.

In the buttocks, biostimulators work as a wildcard. Depending on the technique used, the treatment can give projection, volume and even improve the appearance of cellulite — in addition to reducing sagging skin.

“We apply the substance at specific points, where collagen production will be greater. This creates force vectors on the skin and, thus, we achieve the desired result”, says Sobral.

One of Sobral’s most famous patients and adept at the procedure is singer Anitta, 29.

“She lost a lot of weight, this generated a little flaccidity, which was treated with a collagen biostimulator. We were also able to make a leap and improve the cellulite”, he says.

In addition to being a biostimulator, Anitta also used hyaluronic acid to correct depressions on the sides of the hip – known in English as “hip dips”, or “hip dips”, in literal translation.

Another celebrity who does body treatment with collagen biostimulator is presenter Sabrina Sato, 41.

Her goal, which has little flaccidity, was to slow down the aging process, give projection and a slight volume in the butt, says dermatologist Alberto Cordeiro, who has been taking care of Sabrina for 4 years.

“To achieve this effect, we chose to use a slightly higher concentration of product and a marking that favored the warping”, he reports.

THE SheetSabrina says she started having the procedure after the birth of her 3-year-old daughter Zoe.

“After the end of my pregnancy, I was going to parade like a samba school queen and, then, Dr. Alberto recommended the collagen biostimulator to make the skin firmer, give a ‘glue’ appearance to the belly. I used it on my hand, on my neck… I joke that I bathe in Sculptra.”

Cordeiro points out that the results are evident one month after application — it is necessary to wait a while for the product to synthesize collagen — and last up to two years.

“Bio-stimulation generates a peak in collagen production and then it starts to drop. To maintain the result, I propose that maintenance be done every year or a year and a half, but this will depend on the medical evaluation and on each patient” , says.

The dermatologist says that high performance athletes and people who have had bariatric surgery are patients who usually benefit from the treatment.

“In the case of those who underwent bariatric surgery, lost a lot of weight and had a lot of skin left over, sometimes it is necessary to undergo plastic surgery beforehand to remove excess skin”, he points out. “But after, or even during the surgery, it is recommended to apply the biostimulator for the tissues to become firmer.”

Athletes with low body fat, on the other hand, may have a sagging skin appearance. “With biostimulators, we were able to restore that skin’s firmness. When we need more volume, we can associate the treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers.”
