Hemorrhoid disease, the disease of hemorrhoids, occurs at almost the same rate in women and men.
It mainly affects people aged 45-65, while it is the most common benign condition, as it is estimated that it affects one in two people after the age of 50.
“Overall, about 70% of the general population will experience hemorrhoids at least once in their lifetime. It was, and unfortunately still is, a taboo problem, preventing sufferers from visiting the doctor, especially in the initial stages of the disease, with the result that the correct diagnosis is postponed and an immediate treatment is avoided, which poses even greater risks. Like all taboos, this too is accompanied by some myths, which “brake” its treatment, which is not only possible but can also be definitive”, points out Mr. Fotios Archontovasilis, MD, PhD, FISS, FEHS , Director of the 6th Surgical Clinic of the Metropolitan General, specialized in Ortho-anal Surgery and Laser Microsurgery.
The most common myths about hemorrhoids and the truth that applies
1. “Hemorrhoid disease is associated with colon cancer”
The truth is that although hemorrhoids can lead to serious problems, none of them are cancer. Haemorrhoids mean swollen veins, while cancer is caused by a malignant mutation of cells. In any case, however, the patient should not “take for granted” hemorrhoids, since some of its symptoms are common to those of colon cancer, such as e.g. the bleeding.
2. “Spicy foods cause hemorrhoids”
The truth is that spicy foods can be blamed for irritation and itching (itching) in the anal area, as well as for constipation which is the main cause of hemorrhoids. However, they cannot be blamed for directly causing the problem of hemorrhoids, since they cannot affect the veins in the rectal area.
3. “Hemorrhoids cannot be cured”
The truth is that the problem of hemorrhoids is not permanent and often their cause is temporary, such as pregnancy. Now, hemorrhoids can be effectively and permanently treated with the newest minimally invasive surgical methods.
The myth of no treatment exists because many sufferers choose to follow a conservative treatment of their hemorrhoids, rather than immediately visit a doctor for examination. Procrastination and trying to treat with creams, natural home remedies, or even acupuncture carry a multitude of risks, depending on the stage of hemorrhoids. Moreover, these conservative methods only temporarily treat the problem and only if it is in an early stage. But in no case do they offer a definitive solution.
The treatment
“In recent years, the use of specially developed painless lasers has significantly changed the treatment of hemorrhoidal disease. Laser hemorrhoidoplasty, the LHP method, is an innovative, bloodless and painless technique that overcomes the problems of classic open methods,” concludes Mr. Archontovasilis, who analyzes the significant advantages of the method in the treatment of hemorrhoids:
• Microsurgical precision with absolute safety, painless and bloodless, without incision and stitches
• Reducing the risk of open wounds, the possibility of infections and post-operative pain
• Shrinking hemorrhoids instead of removing and removing them, which means that the structure of the anal canal is completely preserved
• Ensuring the protection of the anus, keeping the mucous membranes and the sphincter intact and preventing any possible incontinence or other complications
• Stimulating the underlying tissue and helping to grow new connective tissue
• Efficacy in both early and advanced stages of the disease.
