São Luiz and Albert Einstein hospitals in São Paulo and the Public Ministry of São Paulo informed this Wednesday (15) that they are investigating allegations against physician Renato Kalil for alleged obstetric violence.
The accusations against Kalil surfaced this week, when audios and videos circulated on the internet with disrespectful phrases attributed to the doctor and uttered during the birth of the daughter of influencer Shantal Verdelho, about three months ago. The G1 was the first to report the case.
After the disclosure of the case, British journalist Samantha Pearson, correspondent for The Wall Street Journal in Brazil, told O Globo newspaper that she had gone through traumatic episodes of bullying in Kalil’s office.
This Wednesday (15), two more women told the newspaper O Globo that they were victims of sexual harassment by the doctor.
Considered a reference in Brazilian obstetrics and famous for giving birth to celebrities, Kalil denies the accusations of obstetric violence, claims that the birth took place without “any complications” and that the video was edited, with phrases taken out of context.
In note to leaf, Hospital São Luiz says it repudiates any behavior inappropriate to medical practice. “The institution has not received any formal complaint related to the birth of Ms. Shantal Verdelho, but, given the news, it is investigating what happened. It also clarifies that the doctor is not a hospital employee.”
Albert Einstein reported that an internal administrative proceeding was opened to monitor Kalil’s medical conduct. “The hospital is also attentive to the evaluation of external bodies that are working in the case. It is important to inform that no complaints were identified regarding its practice within the hospital”, says the note.
The Prosecutor for Combating Gender, Domestic and Family Violence against Women, of the Public Ministry of São Paulo (MP-SP), confirmed the opening of a “criminal investigation procedure for initial investigation of the facts, receipt of documents and priority assistance to victims, without prejudice to future gathering of facts in the event of the initiation of a police inquiry to investigate related facts”.
The MP-SP also released an email for people who might be interested in presenting information to contact: [email protected].
After Shantal’s complaint, Cremesp (Regional Council of Medicine of the State of São Paulo) had already opened an investigation into Kalil’s conduct. The investigations proceed under secrecy. According to the entity, details of the accusation will only be revealed after the end of the process.
Through his assistance, Kalil said that he has been an obstetrician and gynecologist for 36 years and that, throughout his career, he has performed more than 10,000 births, without any complaints or incidents.
The note goes on to say: “Mrs. Shantall’s birth took place uneventful and was praised by her on her social networks for 30 days after the birth. Surprisingly, Dr. Renato Kalil started receiving attacks based on a edited video, with content taken out of context. The video in its entirety shows that there is no irregularity or inappropriate posture during the procedure. Attacks on its reputation will be subject to legal measures, with the analysis of the video in its entirety.”
Sexual abuse
This Wednesday (15), the newspaper O Globo reported reports of two more women who said they were victims of the doctor. According to Letícia Domingues, she was raped for three days in a row after being admitted to the Santa Casa de Misericórdia in São Paulo for a gynecological procedure, in October 1991. After discharge, her parents took her to an appointment at Kalil’s office. , where she would have been raped again. To the newspaper, she said that she had not told the case out of fear.
The other woman, who declined to be identified, said that Kalil showed her his penis after a traumatic birth in 1993, when he was on duty at Hospital São Luiz. This after having torn off her placenta painfully during childbirth, according to the report.
To the Rio de Janeiro newspaper, the obstetrician denied the new accusations and declared, in a note, that “he considers the stories absurd and fanciful and strange that they are aired now, 30 years later”.
