The first complete guide in Greece for organ donation and transplantation

Seminars and training programs on organ transplantation in Greece – Who can participate

The first guide in Greece for organ donation and transplantation, as well as a program of webinars for adults, were created by the Onassis Foundation. The Organmeetings are an innovative program, created with his scientific guidance National Transplant Organization (NTO) and the collaboration of the Onassios Cardiac Surgery Center (OKC). Its aim is to provide the right information about organ donation and transplantation, while dispelling myths and stereotypes of the past, which still dominate public opinion.

Who might need a solid organ transplant? What is brain death and why is it completely different from coma and vegetative state? How are appropriate recipients selected for each instrument and how is this done fairly? How do I get my organ donor card? What is organ trading? Does it happen in Greece and Europe? Important questions that every adult citizen wants to ask about this important public health issue can now be answered either through the first complete guide made in Greece for organ donation and transplantation or by participating in the online seminars, which will organized at regular intervals.

Because organ donation concerns us all

Every hour 6 new patients are added to national organ transplant lists in Europe, while more than 6,500 patients die each year waiting for the long-awaited transplant. In Greece, the average waiting time for a kidney transplant exceeds 8 years. It could be a relative, a loved one, ourselves.

The modern way of life, our eating habits, stress, smoking, as well as other aggravating factors for our health, increasingly increase the need for solid organ transplantation. Do we know that each of us is more likely to need an organ in our lifetime due to functional insufficiency than to donate?

For all of us to have the right to a second chance at life, it is important to understand the value of organ donation. It is not only an act of solidarity for our fellow man, it is mainly an attitude of life that, if we all adopt it, then the benefit will return to us, our relatives and our intimates.

Organmeetings educational program

The Organmeetings educational program aspires to clarify the landscape and dispel any myths, stereotypes or misconceptions about this very important, yet largely unexplored topic.

The most complete guide, created with the scientific guidance of the EOM, will also form the basis of the adult information program. Thus, from January 2023, a constant contact with the citizens through webinars, which will be carried out by specialized representatives and partners of the EOM, with the support of the Onassis Foundation, will be launched. The central goal is the correct and responsible information of all interested parties and organizations, so that it becomes clear that organ donation really concerns us all.

Media, agencies, private or public organizations, associations with social work, but also businesses, who would like to link their CSR policy with information about organ donation and transplantation, can now participate in Organmeetings: where knowledge and information meet the second chance in life.

Both the guide to the Organmeetings and the registration form are posted on www.onassis.org. Registration is now open and the first 3 dates for 2023 are: 25 January, 22 March and 24 May (at 15.00). The dates for the 2023-24 season will be announced by the Onassis Foundation and EOM in the summer of 2023.

Who can participate in the seminars?

If any adult citizen represents an organization, organization, media, club, company or business, they can visit the website of the Onassis Foundation and fill out the relevant form. The form, however, can only be completed by executives who can represent the above organizations and organize actions such as the activation for collective participation of employees/members.

Those who will participate in the Organmeetings will be certified by the National Transplant Organization and will be included in the official list of supporters and allies of this information campaign.

Questions and answers about the program:

-Is there a numerical limit of employees or members to participate in the program?

No, there is no minimum or maximum number of participants. For example, a company can join with 100 or 10 employees – or a club with 3 or 40 members. However, participation in the action should be collective and not individual, by a single person.

– Are the seminars only online or can they also take place at the headquarters of an institution, a company, etc.?

It’s online only. The goal is for agencies, associations, companies, etc., to join forces through the internet, creating a great chain of hope and solidarity.

-Can a company or an organization participate in the seminars for a second time, with a new number of persons/employees/members?

Of course, after their initial participation in the program has been completed.
