Weekly report on respiratory infections: Flu “harvesting”, 137 deaths from coronavirus

An increase in cases of flu and viruses was recorded in the last week in Greece – 109 people intubated with coronavirus – An increase in cases of the RSV virus as well

The weekly report on the respiratory infections currently circulating in Greece was published by EODY.

As mentioned in the report, cases of influenza showed a further increase, while 137 deaths due to Covid-19 were recorded.

In summary week 51:

Influenza syndromes (regardless of pathogen)
✓ a further increase compared to the previous week was recorded in the community
✓ the increase concerned all age groups
✓ in the age groups 0-4, 5-14 and over 65 the number of influenza subscriptions per 1,000 visits exceeded the corresponding number for the period 2019-2020 (before the pandemic)

SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection
✓ the number of admissions for COVID-19 was at the same levels as the previous week
✓ 109 new intubations of patients with COVID-19 infection were recorded
✓ 137 deaths were recorded with a median age of 85 years (range 56-96)
✓ the BA.5 sub-variant is still the most frequent Omicron sub-variant in our country
✓ the percentage ratio of the two sub-variants BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 shows an increase in relation to the other sub-variants of the BA.5 strain
✓ among BA.2 strains, the most frequently recognized sub-variant is BA.2.75
✓ surveillance of viral load in urban wastewater showed an increase in SARSCoV2 virus circulation in 3 of the 7 areas tested

Influenza virus
✓ flu positivity in the community showed a further increase
✓ 7 new serious cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza type A were registered, involving ICU patients and 2 new deaths in week 51/2022
✓ in total, from week 40/2022 to week 51/2022, 24 people with flu were hospitalized in ICU and 3 deaths of patients with laboratory-confirmed flu were recorded
✓ in total, from week 40/2022 to week 51/2022, 150 samples positive for influenza viruses were analyzed in the 2 reference centers, of which 149 (99%) were type A strains and one (1%) was type A strain B
✓ of the 149 type A strains, 147 (99%) were classified as subtype A(H3N2) and 2 (1%) as subtype A(H1N1)pdm09

Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV
✓ positivity increased compared to the previous week in a sample from mass sampling in the community (non-sentinel samples)

New arrivals of COVID-19

Total new patient admissions to the territory’s hospitals for COVID-19 in week 51/2022 were 1,250 (seven-day average: 179 admissions, -7% weekly change).

New COVID-19 intubations

The number of new intubations of patients with COVID-19 infection in week 51/2022 was 109 (63% male). The median age of patients was 76 years (range: 2-102), while 97% had an underlying disease and/or age 70 years or older.

Surveillance of severe cases of influenza

In week 51/2022, 7 new serious cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza type A were recorded, with hospitalization in ICU. These are 5 men and 2 women from 41 to 83 years old and a median age of 69 years. In total, from week 40/2022 to week 51/2022, 24 people were hospitalized with flu in the ICU.

Surveillance of deaths from COVID-19 infection

In week 51/2022 there were 137 deaths of COVID-19 patients (-12% weekly change), with a median age of 85 years (range 56-96). All of the deceased had underlying diseases and/or were 70 years of age or older.

Surveillance of influenza deaths

From week 40/2022 to week 51/2022, 3 deaths of patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza have been recorded. They are 1 man and 2 women aged 78 to 84.

Samples positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus

From weeks 09-10 of 2022 when Omicron completely prevailed until weeks 49-50 of 2022, a total of 16,532 samples were genomically analyzed.

The BA.5 strain is still the most commonly identified. Regarding the temporal evolution of the sub-variants of the BA.5 strain, in week 39 the sub-variant BQ.1 and then BQ.1.1 appeared. Among the BA.2 strains, the most frequently recognized sub-variant is BA.2.75.
