Mosialos: The whole truth about the effectiveness of AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson against Omicron

by

It seems that the AstraZeneca (AZ) and Johnson & Johnson (JJ) vaccines fail to stop the initial Omicron variant infection and also to prevent mild infection, as we know from laboratory rather than clinical data. But there is no research that proves that they do not reduce the chance of serious infection and this is the most important. Also the first two doses of AZ and JJ are not useless, as it is the condition to build adequate protection from the micron with the third dose with the vaccine of Moderna or Pfizer.

This was pointed out in a Facebook post by Professor of Health Policy Elias Mosialos of Imperial College and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), stressing that reports that the two doses specifically of the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines do not protect us from Omicron variant, have caused great confusion to many, who think that the third dose they will do with the vaccine of Moderna or Pfizer, will be essentially like doing the first dose, that is, that the two doses they have already done were useless .

However, as he emphasizes, “this is not the case. The third dose with mRNA vaccine, to put it simply, “steps on the two previous doses”, or else “builds on the pre-existing protection” we have after the vaccination. In addition, it does what is needed now: it creates an adequate titer of antibodies in terms of preventing serious infection, but also preventing mild infection in over 70% of those who take the third dose.

He reminds that vaccines help to prevent the initial infection, while if there is an infection, they help to keep it mild and not serious. They also reduce the chance of spreading it from those who have been vaccinated.

He also points out that “cellular immunity is what is responsible for our long-term immune response. And there is no research so far that measures the cellular immunity induced by these vaccines against Omicron. “The only thing that is certain so far is that the defense after the third dose with mRNA vaccine, after the previous two doses of AZ, multiplies the titer of antibodies to levels that are considered sufficient to prevent serious infection, and for Omicron.”

Therefore, it concludes, based on the available data:

«1. As for the protection offered by vaccines, while we know that both doses do not prevent mild infection, we do not know the levels of protection against severe infection, nor for cellular immunity. Therefore, those who say that vaccines do not protect us at all, let us be more careful until we have all the data.

2. The first two doses of AZ and JJ are not useless. “It is a prerequisite for building adequate protection against the micron with the third dose with the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine.”
