The polluted sea is a thermometer of the situation of basic sanitation in the country, as the parameter is the amount of fecal coliforms in the water. During this period, Brazil was unable to advance in the quality of its beaches, which reflects the slowness in expanding the sewage collection and treatment network.
The period considered is always from November to October, except in Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, which only measure during high season. Pará, Piauà and Amapá are not included because they do not monitor or have not responded.
In 2020, the new coronavirus pandemic caused a data blackout. Even with the return of life to normal, some states continue with a good part of the collections paralyzed, like Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco, which are unmeasured in half of the points.
