In the absence of monitoring at the national level, the leaf for six years it has been collecting data on the bathing facilities of all Brazilian beaches from environmental agencies in 14 coastal states. In the search engine at the end, you can check the status of each of them from 2016 to 2021.
The polluted sea is a thermometer of the situation of basic sanitation in the country, as the parameter is the amount of fecal coliforms in the water. During this period, Brazil was unable to advance in the quality of its beaches, which reflects the slowness in expanding the sewage collection and treatment network.
The period considered is always from November to October, except in Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, which only measure during high season. Pará, Piauí and Amapá are not included because they do not monitor or have not responded.
In 2020, the new coronavirus pandemic caused a data blackout. Even with the return of life to normal, some states continue with a good part of the collections paralyzed, like Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco, which are unmeasured in half of the points.
