Sunday: Chinese authorities to share data on coronavirus – EU continues to monitor situation closely

“The Commission has reached out to China to offer solidarity and support in any way necessary, if needed,” Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou said in a written statement.

“The important agreement reached yesterday by Member States on a coordinated response to the evolving COVID-19 situation in China, and based on the opinion of the Health Security Committee, is a very welcome step as it will help strengthen their ability to they are monitoring the spread of the virus and the protection of our citizens,” Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou said in a written statement.

He also noted that “the EU will continue to work with its Member States and international partners to closely monitor the situation and react accordingly” pointing out that “this must be done in a spirit of solidarity, trust and transparency. Therefore, it is important that the Chinese authorities regularly share with global partners reliable data on the evolution of COVID indicators and sequencing.”

“This is the best way to be prepared for any situation and to identify potential new and dangerous variants. The Commission has built bridges of communication with China to offer solidarity and support in any necessary way, if needed” Ms. Kyriakidou concluded.
