One in 20 UK residents were carriers of the coronavirus over the festive period, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

This ratio corresponds to 2.97 million inhabitants and is based on sample checks of thousands of citizens.

Figures are for the week to December 28.

It is estimated that the cases doubled in the last month of last year, with the new variant of the HBV.1.5 virus or “Kraken” making its appearance on British soil.

Scientists and doctors are concerned that the contagious variant will spread across the country, increasing pressure on the already faltering NHS health system.

Already public health services are dealing with the biggest flu outbreak in a decade, with 5,105 hospitalized at the end of December. This is an increase of 47% in one week.
