The report reviews the available epidemiological data of the EODY surveillance systems for viral infections of the respiratory system

One hundred and eighty-six deaths and 147 intubated from coronavirus, and 2 deaths from flu, states the EODY in its weekly report. The number of admissions for COVID-19 showed an increase, as did the number of new intubations. A total of 12 people have died from influenza since the start of the surveillance period.

The report reviews the available epidemiological data of the EODY surveillance systems for viral infections of the respiratory system (SARSCoV-2, influenza viruses and respiratory syncytial virus – RSV) in our country for the week of 02/2023 (09 January 2023 – 15 January 2023).

Influenza syndromes (regardless of pathogen)

  • a decrease compared to the previous week was recorded in the community
  • the decrease applied to all age groups

SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection

  • positivity in all tested samples decreased compared to the previous week
  • the number of admissions for COVID-19 showed an increase
  • the number of new intubations showed an increase
  • the number of intubated patients with COVID-19 infection is 147
  • 186 deaths were recorded with a median age of 84 years (range 44-102)
  • the BA.5 sub-variant is still the most common Omicron sub-variant
  • the percentage of the sub-variant BQ.1.1 increased relative to the remaining sub-variants of the BA.5 strain
  • among BA.2 strains, the most frequently recognized sub-variant is BA.2.75 followed by the XBB sub-variant
  • the XBB.1.5 subvariant has been detected in a total of 7 samples
  • the CH.1.1 subvariant of BA.2.75 has been detected in 93 samples (week 43-week 52)
  • surveillance of viral load in municipal wastewater showed increased circulation of SARSCoV2 in 5 of 7 areas tested

Influenza virus

  • flu positivity in the community showed a decrease
  • 5 new severe cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza type A were recorded, involving ICU patients and 2 new deaths in the week of 02/2023
  • in total, from week 40/2022 to week 02/2023, 46 people with influenza were hospitalized in ICU and 12 deaths of patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza were recorded
  • in total from week 40/2022 to week 02/2023 238 samples positive for influenza viruses were detected, of which 235 (99%) were type A strains and 3 (1%) were type B strains
  • of the 228 type A strains, 220 (96.5%) were classified as subtype A(H3N2) and 8 (3.5%) as subtype A(H1N1)pdm09

Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV

  • positivity showed an increase compared to the previous week
