The City of Rio de Janeiro released this Thursday (6) the vaccination schedule for children aged 5 to 11 years. Young people will start taking the immunizations from the 17th of this month and the forecast is that this target audience has taken the first dose by the 9th of February.
The campaign will be divided by sex and starts with the vaccination of 11-year-old girls until reaching 5-year-old boys on February 8th. On the 9th there will be a repechage for those who missed the immunization.
The city hall estimates that 560,000 children are vaccinated with the Pfizer immunizer, the only one authorized so far for this public.
This Wednesday (05), the Ministry of Health announced that children aged 5 to 11 years will receive the vaccine without the need to present a medical prescription.
The idea had been presented by the ministry after Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) approved the immunizing agent for children on December 16th. Experts, however, considered that the proposal encourages vaccine hesitancy and restricts access to vaccines.
The government then decided to submit the idea to a popular consultation with the participation of around 100,000 people. Most people were against the measure.
The city of Rio publishes the vaccination schedule for children amid the increase in Covid-19 infections in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The positive test rate for the disease was at 13% last week and jumped to 41% this week. In mid-December, this percentage was at 1%.
The total number of confirmed Covid cases by symptom onset date also jumped. The moving average increased from 20 cases in December to 720 on Monday (3). Experts attribute this scenario to the omicron variant.
The capital’s Health Secretary, Daniel Soranz, said that, with vaccination, the expectation is that this growth in cases will not be reflected in the increase in hospitalizations and deaths. The secretary also said that there is no more flu epidemic in the city.
Due to the increase in cases, Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD) decided to cancel the city’s street carnival on Tuesday (4). The parade in SapucaĂ, however, remains confirmed so far.
SĂ£o Paulo is also experiencing an increase in Covid cases. The HCor hospital, in SP, recorded on Tuesday (4) the highest volume of emergency room visits in its history. Of 388 patients who sought help, 252 had flu-like symptoms.
The HCor still recorded a 175% jump in the number of patients hospitalized with Covid in the last week. He went from eight to 22 patients.
Amid the increase in cases, the government of SĂ£o Paulo announced this Wednesday (5) the existence of a vaccination plan for all children from five to 11 years old in three weeks. According to the government, the plan provides for the vaccination of 250,000 children a day.
