The announcement of the EODY on respiratory infections in the last week
The weekly report on respiratory infections was published by EODY.
According to the results of the Report, there are 38 deaths from coronavirus and 57 intubated ones in the last week.
In summary week 15/2023:
Influenza syndromes (regardless of pathogen)
✓ a small increase compared to the previous week was recorded in the community
SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection
✓ the positivity in all the tested samples showed an increase in relation to
last week
✓ the number of admissions for COVID-19 showed an increase compared to the previous one
week, while showing a 3% increase compared to the average weekly number of new people
imports during the previous 4 weeks
✓ the number of new intubations showed a decrease compared to the previous week
and a 44% decrease from the average weekly number of new intubations during
previous 4 weeks
✓ the number of patients with COVID-19 infection who are hospitalized with intubation is 57
✓ 38 deaths were recorded with a median age of 85.5 years (range 58-93 years)
✓ during the last weeks all sequenced strains belonged to the BA.2 sub-variants
and Omicron’s BA.5, with BA.2 predominating from week 9 onwards
✓ at week 13 the sub-variant BQ.1.1 was the most frequent sub-variant of BA.5 (76%)
✓ at week 13 the most frequent BA.2 sub-variant was XBB.1.5 (85%), followed by
the BA.2.75 sub-variant (9%)
✓ surveillance of viral load in municipal wastewater showed an increase in SARSCoV-2 virus circulation in 6 out of 10 areas tested
Influenza virus
✓ positivity for influenza in the community showed a decrease in sentinel samples
✓ no new serious case of laboratory-confirmed influenza with hospitalization in ICU was registered
in week 15/2023, while no new death from laboratory-confirmed influenza was reported
✓ from week 40/2022 to week 15/2023, 67 people were hospitalized with flu in
ICU and 25 deaths were recorded
✓ during the same period, 347 samples positive for viruses were recorded in the two influenza reference centers
influenza (sentinel and hospital samples), of which 286 (82%) were strains
type A and 61 (18%) type B strains
✓ of the 284 type A strains subtyped, 258 (91%) were classified into the subtype
A(H3N2) and 26 (9%) in subtype A(H1N1)pdm09
✓ during the last weeks, there has been an increase in the type B influenza virus
Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV
✓ positivity remained at low levels
