Health announces 600,000 more doses of Pfizer pediatric vaccine in January

by

The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, said that the ministry managed to advance to January another 600,000 doses of Pfizer vaccines for children aged 5 to 11 years against Covid. Thus, there will be 4.3 million doses this month.

The initial plan is to receive 20 million doses by March for this public, enough to immunize about half of the population aged 5 to 11 years.

Of this total, the government expected to receive 3.7 million doses by the end of January. They will be distributed proportionally to the states and the Federal District.

The executive secretary of the Ministry of Health, Rodrigo Cruz, had already said that the first flight with vaccines would arrive on January 13. Thus, there is a possibility that some states will start vaccination on January 14.

Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) authorized the use of the Pfizer vaccine to immunize children aged 5 to 11 years against Covid-19 on December 16. Children were included in the national vaccination plan on January 5th.

The Ministry of Health evaluates using Coronavac in children if the immunizer is approved by Anvisa.

As the vaccine is the same used in adults, states are already planning to apply doses to children. Today, there are stocks, and the immunizing agent is pointed out by specialists as a good option for children.

Members of the Ministry of Health say that it is still not possible to establish a deadline for ending the immunization of children in Brazil.

According to interlocutors in the folder, the pace will depend on the possible inclusion of Coronavac in the schedule and on an eventual increase in the number of doses purchased from Pfizer in the first quarter.
