Pfizer vaccine not associated with increased risk of heart attack, stroke or pulmonary embolism

by

The evaluation of the safety of the BNT162b2 vaccine (Pfizer / BioNTech) in individuals over 75 years of age is of particular value, as this population group was poorly represented in the phase 3 clinical trials that led to the approval of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Doctors of the Therapeutic Clinic of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Theodora Psaltopoulou, Giannis Danasis, Panos Malandrakis and Thanos Dimopoulos (Rector of EKPA) summarize the findings of the relevant publication of Marie Joella Jabagi 1): 80-82.

The researchers collected data on all patients aged 75 years and older who were treated between 15 December 2020 and 30 April 2021 by the French National Health Database and the French Vaccination Database against COVID-19. By April 30, 2021, nearly 3.9 million people aged 75 and over had received at least 1 dose of BNT162b2 and 3.2 million had received 2 doses of the vaccine. During the follow-up period, 11,113 people aged 75 years and older were hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction, 17,014 for ischemic stroke, 4,804 for hemorrhagic stroke, and 7,221 for pulmonary embolism.

Of these, at least one vaccine dose was 58.6%, 54%, 42.7% and 55.3%, respectively. During the 14 days after each vaccination dose (either after the 1st dose or after the 2nd dose), the risk of any of the evaluated outcomes (myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, haemorrhage) did not increase significantly. stroke, pulmonary embolism).

In addition, no increased risk of these events was observed even when a sub-analysis was performed for the period of 1 and 2 weeks after each vaccination dose separately. In conclusion, vaccination with BNT162b2 did not increase the risk of acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and pulmonary embolism within 14 days of vaccination in adults 75 years of age and older.
