Specifically, the clinic is one of the few centers in southern Europe that performs robotic endoscopic posterior muscle repair combined with posterior muscle separation (eTEP-RS-TAR).

The specialized surgical rehabilitation is carried out by Dr. Charalambo SpyropoulosSpecialist Abdominal Wall Hernia Surgeon, Director of the 3rd Surgical Clinic and director of the Hernia Surgery Center of Excellence Metropolitan General.

The most recent and interesting application of the robotic endoscopic technique was on 21/04/2023 in a patient who had previously undergone 5 failed operations for recurrent abdominal hernia (4 open and 1 laparoscopic method), in various hospitals in Greece. Using Metropolitan General’s most advanced robotic system, the DaVinci Xi, and through only four 8mm holes, the complex surgical reconstruction of the patient’s entire abdominal wall was completed. The hospitalization was only 24 hours and the patient was discharged home the day after the operation, in excellent condition.

The application of the robotic endoscopic technique of rehabilitation by the 3rd Surgical Clinic of the Metropolitan General hospital, creates new perspectives in the treatment of patients with complex hernias of the abdominal wall. The operation is performed inside the muscular compartments of the abdominal wall, without surgical manipulations inside the abdomen. Therefore, it allows avoiding the adhesions that may be present from previous operations and achieves the total reconstruction of the abdominal wall and the placement of the mesh at an ideal point (between the abdominal muscles without contact with the intra-abdominal viscera) to minimize complications and risk relapse.
