Ms. Pagoni noted that streptococcus is treatable in the first two 24 hours and that it is rare for someone to lose their life, but attention is required for small children up to 8-10 years old and for very old people who have underlying diseases.
Concern prevails in the country about the cases of streptococcus, after the announcement of the EODY that speaks of 6 deaths of children, including the 7-year-old in Thessaloniki.
The president of EINAP Matina Pagonis spoke to ERT about strep and drew parents’ attention to specific symptoms during the illness.
Ms. Pagoni noted that streptococcus is treatable in the first two 24 hours and that it is rare for someone to lose their life, but attention is required for small children up to 8-10 years old and for very old people who have underlying diseases.
“Of course we have had incidents in previous years as well, but also since January we have had several incidents with streptococcus. What I’m trying to say is that it’s a bacterium, it’s a germ, and it causes these infections. These incidents are difficult, but they are dealt with. What is important is the first twenty-four hours to see the symptoms and assess them in the child. That is, when a child has a very high fever that persists, has a severe sore throat and immediately tells you “I can’t swallow” and starts saying that his muscles hurt, know that you should have immediate communication with the pediatrician and the child he should start doing the tests and start treatment” emphasized Mrs. Pagoni.
“It is transmitted by droplets. Transmitted with surfaces. That is, if someone has a trauma and comes into contact with the incident, it is logical to transmit it. It does not spread as quickly as other bacteria. What do we have to do; We can take the necessary hygiene measures. We will tell the children how to wash their hands at school, at home. Simple things that we often forget but are necessary, they are necessary” he noted.
“It starts with pharyngitis, tonsillitis several times, which also causes the parent to worry that he will immediately contact the pediatrician. The pediatrician gives the instructions and the treatment starts from there,” said Ms. Pagoni and added.
“What is important is to say the following: This bacterium can quickly cause complications in your organs, especially in the kidneys and heart, and cause septicemia.”
